What is Content Marketing?

Introduction to Content Marketing

When the internet first came into itself, paid advertising was king and content marketing was virtually non-existent. Every time you logged on banner ads were everywhere, their animated gifs littering the screen. Then… Google happened and the internet grew up a bit. It become more innovative, more intelligent, more organic. Paid advertising was not going to cut it any more. If you wanted to get any traction you had to have good content.

Now, you are hard pressed to find any comprehensive marketing plan that does not address content. Email marketing an paid advertising are still important, but they do not garner the attention that content marketing does. This can mean many things, but at the end of the day it really just means one thing; content marketing is important.

The Basics

it seems like overnight it became a buzz word and is now a staple of any good web marketing plan. Simply put, it is the process of producing and putting out great rich, consistent content on blogs, websites, social media, and other online venues. By doing this, more people read your information and remain engaged in your site. Search engines recognize your pages as important and your rank (the order in which you are listed on search page results) is improved. The goal with good content marketing is to get to page one of the most trusted search engine sites and stay there.

The key to content marketing is one thing, consistency. Producing rich, informative content is much better than writing seo driven articles filled with fluff and keywords. When you write fluff articles, the internet “notices” if you will. It dismisses the content as bland and dooms you to page 8 or 9 of returned search engine results. You want to avoid that at all costs.

Content Marketing Applications

Once you get in the habit of producing good informative content, all you have to do is post it. With so many venues today the possibilities are endless. You can post on linkedin, facebook, twitter, and your blog. Of course you want to post on your website as well if you have one. The more places you place engaging information, the better your results will be.

Don’t forget those photos too. Even sites like tumblr and instagram are great places to post engaging content,. Think about it. How many times have you seen a photo from one of these sites pop up in your facebook news feed? Think about how many people saw that photo as a result of the posting. Now keep in mind the internet records that as well and uses it to rank that particular page.

Over time, the more good content you post, the better your rankings will be. The key to all of this is putting a team together that can produce the type of content you need. Once you have, rich, relevant content, the only thing left to do is put it out there and wait for your rank to improve!
